Throughout time denim was designed to last and when it turns up in indigo blue  has been accumulating narratives, stories and myths to do with place and time – Japan, California, 'pop culture', etc.

Indigo denim in a global context carries layer upon layer of meaning with much of it finding its foundation in 'The American Dream', gold mining and the material wealth. Nonetheless there are quite different resonances at work in Japanese culture and the sensitivities and sensibilities  that inform it.

Currently globalism's relevance in a 21st C  context is being interrogated and reimagining 'materiality' is increasingly on the agenda as resources, and access to them, are the subject of a range of changing imperatives – environmental, sociopolitical, cultural etc. Almost unavoidably this cloth comes loaded with cultural cargo not to mention the 'wabi-sabi factor'.

When you buy a house and the owner before last leaves you an ASHpan that you can also use to pick up 'doggy-dooz' you have something of real value. When the dog chews the handle it is really, really annoying until there's this apple tree branch that's much better than a 'bought-one' IF you can find one– and better than the one that the dog chewed. 

At this point a repair can become a real treasure. The aesthetic at wortk is known INhouse as RSB (Robust Strong & Beautiful) AKA 'rip-shit-and-bust'

Perfectly imperfect

At its simplest, wabi-sabi is an aesthetic ideal that stresses the authentic over the artificial, the worn over the new, and the imperfect over the ideal. Wabi (侘) can refer to the imperfections of objects, the simplicity of everyday items that fulfill a function rather than a form. Sabi (寂) brings to mind wear and tear that reminds us that nothing last forever and that signs of age on an object might actually help us appreciate its value that much more. After all, nothing lasts forever, and items - both natural and man-made - experience their own lives as they are created and fall into decay. The authenticity of existence is what wabi-sabi is all about: imperfection, authenticity, and impermanence.
